  • Obituary
Son of Mere Grant and Ahipene Te Maro of Rangitukia. Herewini was born and raised in the Waiapu Valley, the area around Tikitiki, Ruatoria, and Tokomaru Bay, in the Gisborne District of New Zealand.

As Private Te Maro 19770 Herewini served with the Maori Pioneer Batallion on the Western Front in France where he contracted Tuberculosis (TB). He was invalided from the theatre of war in Europe in 1918 and passed away at Waikato Hospital in New Zealand from TB of the Lung.

The increase in TB cases spiked during WW1 and is thought to be due to the overcrowded conditions that led to increased transmissibility along with the prolonged mental and physical strain that weakened soldiers immune systems.

Those with TB returned home to relief and celebration of their families but it wasn't long before they joined their comrades who had been killed in the field. Public - Lorraine Mona - Researcher - 14 August 2023 - https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/198333687/herewini-te_maro
