For gallantry and devotion to duty during the Gravenstafel operations on October 4th 1917. This man showed exceptional bravery and coolness under heavy fire and with his squad time after time cleared the front of wounded men. • My father was on the other side of the stretcher from Ben Thorn when shrapnel entered his head. I have a moving account of the incident in which Ben Thorn died in my father's memoir, if you wish to contact me. My sister and I laid a poppy at the memorial wall at Buttes New British Cemetery in 2004.
