IN MEMORIAN. WILLIAMS - in loving memory of our friend Pte Lloyd G. Williams, 1st Auckland Infantry Brigade, killed in action on Messines Hill. June 7th 1917, only son of Mrs. E.Williams, Llanddewi, Wales. (This is where Robert's family came from.)

      A SOLDIER'S DEATH.
The family of Mr R.Roberts is in receipt of particulars of the death in action of a close friend of the late Pte. Roberts, namely Pte. L.G.Williams, who was known in Nambour as a resident here for a time. How he met his end is thus described: "Williams was a bomber in the same platoon as I was. As we were digging in just after taking our objective at Messines on June 7, at 7am, I was a few yards behind Williams, who was with Lieut.Cobb, when a shell burst close to them and killed Lieut.Cobb and wounded Williams in the head. I went over to him, and someone bandaged him. He did not speak, and only lived three hours in the shell hole partly conscious, dying about 10 o'clock. We buried him together with Lieut.Cobb in the shell hole about 5pm, and put up a rough wooden cross we had made." Informant Lance Corporal Pirrih of the Lewis gun school.
