  • Son of Mr Archibald and Jane Brown, of 27 Manor Place, Dunedin, New Zealand. His father migrated to New Zealand as a ship's carpenter, then worked as a carpenter with the New Zealand Railways and was also an inspector of bridges.

    Willis (Anthony) was the eighth child in a family of eleven.

    His parents and at least three of the unmarried sisters moved to Dunedin shortly before WW1 began.

    A skilled rugby player, his sister, watched as he spat out three front teeth on Rugby Park, Invercargill and carried on playing.

  • My father Gordon Brown, (Willis' nephew, aged 94 in April 2015) states that Willis locked the scrum for the New Zealand Services team before his death at Bapaume.
