  • Five brothers served in World War 1, 4 were killed - Arthur (81637), Edward (12/1163), Archibald (48440), William (6/2489) and James (13/2163); only Edward (12/1163) survived.

    Trooper Browne was originally member of the Samoan Advance Party. He was discharged 13 April 1915. He joined 1st NZEF Force 15 June 1915, leaving for Gallipoli on 14 August 1915 with Auckland Mounted Rifles.

    Not buried by Regiment as his grave was situated outside unit lines.

    Memorial in Waikumete Cemetery, Auckland: In Loving Memory of Trooper J. Browne. killed in Action (Gaza). 19 April 1917. Aged 25 years. This memorial has the names of three other brothers who died during World War One and one brother who survived the war and died in 1970. AWMM
