  • Walter Haeata came to Auckland from Hawkes Bay for his primary schooling staying with the Misses Cole until he entered St John College for his secondary education. Tohe Haeata attended St John College from 1904 to 1908. He was football and cricket captain.

    He went farming at Karaka and in 1914 enlisted in the Main Body. His wife predeceased him.

    His family recalls that he was Batman to Sir Bernard Freyberg. They say of him: "He will always be remembered as one of nature's gentlemen." AWMM
