Sergeant Nigel Anthony Plummer, mentioned in the above list as now officially presumed dead, was the youngest son of Captain and Mrs. S. J. Plummer, of Tokomaru Bay, and was well known on the East Coast and in the Gisborne district as a Rugby footballer with a promising career ahead of him. Born in Tokomaru Bay 24 years ago and educated at Hereworth College and the Gisborne High School, Sergeant Plummer played for the East Coast Rugby representatives, and at the time of his enlistment was playing in the Hastings competitions and in rigorous training in the hope of having a chance of selection for the New Zealand team that was to have visited South Africa. He entered the Royal New Zealand Air Force in 1941, and after preliminary training in the Dominion went to Canada before being drafted to a Spitfire squadron in England early last year. He took part in the Dieppe raid and in November accompanied the first landing in North Africa, going almost immediately to the Tunisian battle area before the establishment of proper lines.
