  • Laurence Connell was the son of James Michael and Caroline Rosa Connell (nee Steele); husband of Minnie M. Connell (formerly Tait), of Skeet Rd., Auroa, New Plymouth, New Zealand. Born at Auckland.

    Disembarked Suez, 12 February 1916. Joined 2nd Bn, Wellington Infantry Regiment, Ismailia, and reverted to ranks, 7 March 1916.
    Appointed Temporary Sergeant, 13 March 1916; promoted Sergeant, 13 March 1916.
    Embarked Alexandria for France, 9 April 1916.
    Wounded in action, 16 September 1916 (gun shot wound, right hip); admitted to 23rd General Hospital, Etaples, 18 September 1916; transferred to England, 24 September 1916, and admitted to No 2 NZ General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames, 25 September 1916; discharged to duty as Base Detail at No 2 NZ General Hospital, 6 January 1917.
    Admitted to No 2 NZ General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames, 8 February 1917 (cardiac trouble); transferred to NZ Convalescent Hospital, Hornchurch, 21 March 1917.
    Classified unfit for War Service and placed on NZ Roll.
    Detached to Discharge Depot, Torquay, 26 May 1917.
    Commenced return to New Zealand from Plymouth on board 'Arawa', 21 July 1917; discharged (no longer physically fit for War Service on account of illness contracted on Active Service), 26 November 1917.
