DSO: NZ Gazette, 30 April 1946, citation: "For gallantry and distinguished leadership. Lieutenant Colonel Fairbrother commanded 26 NZ Battalion during the recent campaign, from the date of the attack on the Senio until the conclusion of hostilities. During this period his Battalion carried out a number of attacks; all of which were completely successful. He was continually with forward companies, making personal reconnaissances with complete disregard for his personal safety, and inspiring his men with his tireless and determined leadership. From 12 April till 16 April his battalion fought five set-piece attacks under barrages, all prepared at very short notice. As a result his battalion cross [sic] the Santerno and the Sillaro and exploited to a considerable depth beyond. AWMM

  • My Dad bought me beautiful blue leather Sandals when he came back from the war and gave me a black special Fountain pen for my sixth birthday..He left when I was newborn so I did not know what a dad was It was magic getting blue shoes and a pen that was so grown up with a gold nib. He would also take me out to lunch sometimes at Kirkcaldies on his work days while he was writing the NEW ZEALAND WAR HISTORIES. When I wads at Boarding School he would bring me bags of apples as he was driving through masterton to go to do training his recruits at linton Camp or Waiouru.. People who always had a DADDY at home with them must develop a very different relationship with that special person. because he is part of their lives from the beginning and always. My son said to me at my Dad.s funeral I always wanted a Grandpa and it would have been nice to have a granddad like monty....oooh...HE WAS MY
