  • Hi Great Grandkoro,
Every ANZAC day we March for you, my children, and me. Thank you for your service in the Māori Pioneer Regiment in Egypt, Turkey, and in Europe. I married a serviceman who lost his Grandad in the next World War on the battlefield of Italy. If you see him where you are give him a hug from his family.
Thank you Great Koro, I wished I had met you to hear your stories even though I know from personal experiences that you probably would have had War trauma and PTSD preventing you from telling of the horrors of war but I'm sure I'll meet you one sunny day on the other side and you can tell me then. Until that day, I will tell the story I know to future generations and will continue to March in your honor. We are seeking the medals you earned so our kids can March wearing them. Rest in the arms of Jesus
    With much Aroha
    Your Great Grandmoko

  • What was your life like? Did you want to go to war? Did it worry you were taking life even to save your own? Did you ever feel the same after returning? Did the country officials provide you all with benefits to help you transition from the war to civilian life? Did you dream of a better life for you and our whanau?
Did you dream of walking on your land, through the trees, sitting on the hill, laying in the grass looking up at the sky, falling asleep dreaming…?
Did you dream about raising your whanau on your own land, teaching them to work the land, building a humble abode, drawing water from the natural spring, lots of tamariki and moko running around, everyone getting ready for the day, whanau feasts, fruit trees and vegetable patches, livestock, helping community…….? I know I do.
Your dream was the right of any man’s dream… what great vision you had!
    Love from your Grand-daughter
