12/451 Sgt. Matthew Rapana STEWART
Enlisting in August/September 1914, he spent time in the mobilisation Camp in Epsom, Auckland before embarking on the 16th October 1914 with the main body as a member of the 6th Hauraki Company.
He saw action on the Suez Canal against the Turks in February 1915 and took part in the landing at Gaba tepe, Gallipoli on April 25 1915.
Matthews younger brother David Apanui Stewart (16/123 Pte Pareiha Tuati) serving with the NZ Maori Contingent died 16.08.15 while they where both in Gallipoli, just 1 mile away.
Matthew then continued onto France with the 6th Hauraki Comany until the end of WW1, serving from 16.10.1914 - 14.03.1919 he was wounded in action 3 times, and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.
Matthew married Celene Mary Banks in 1920 and had one daughter Tarei Stewart, passing away in 1975 at the age of 83.
