  • Husband of Mabel and then from December 1934 Cecily Mary Wise Pickerill nee Clarkson (1903-1988)

    He established a medical unit for the treatment of facial and jaw injuries at No.2 New Zealand General Hospital at Walton-on-Thames. On arrival back in Dunedin in 1919, he continued the unit, and resumed his position as Dean of the Dental School at the University of Otago.

    Doctor Pickerill pioneered the use of bone, skin and fat grafting and jaw wiring in the treatment of servicemen with severe facial injuries inflicted in the trenches. (150 Alumni Heroes, The University of Otago Magazine) AWMM

  • H.p. Pickerill, was a great man and did so much for NZ. Our soldiers and our children also training his wife Who did so much for NZ children (see A DAme We Knew, a tribute to Dame Cecily Pickerill) B Harris. Dr HPP your ideas are being reinvented as we speak.! Causes of Dental caries today, sounds like a new event! You were first and the best n NZ. As Swee Tan has said, without our pioneers where would we be now. Sorry you were left alone on your voyage to Australia but glad seven years later you found Cecily and You and she were so good together. Beryl. H
