      Alexander Frederick McIntyre prior to leaving for overseas service where he would eventually die at Gallipoli in Turkey. The medal I have of Alexanders is The Dead Man's Penny, which in reality is the size of a music CD and quite heavy, certainly not one that you would pin on you to wear at the Anzac Day parade. I have again been researching my history to build up a McIntyre family tree and upon ‘studying’ Alexander I have found that he is the illegitimate son of my Great Grandfather Malcom McIntyre’s daughter Margaret Elizabeth (the same name as her Mother). Alexander was kept in the family and bought up as a brother to Margaret junior. During my research of Alexander I have built up a liking for this young man who at a very early age of maybe twenty one, had his life cut short in a foreign country, being Turkey and back here in New Zealand he was not given the recognition that he deserved. Years ago while my Father was visiting me I can recall him and his cousin Jackie McIntyre who also lived here in Nelson, almost whispering to each other about him and the fact that his Mother wasn’t married. So now I am through my family tree and my life story book bring the poor bugger out into the open. I have made inquiries on the Internet and found on The Commonwealth War Graves Commission site that he was enrolled into the Army in 1914 and died on April the 27th 1915 (which so happens is the day in April 2009 that I write this chapter,) And which was on day two of the initial invasion of Gallipoli, which was to last some eight months before they made a ‘successful stealthy retreat’ after such a disastrous bloody battle. I am so glad that I personally have not had to experience war and I sincerely hope that my descendants don’t have to either. Thank you for our freedom Great Uncle Alex.   • Thank You Alexander F McIntyre for you laying down of your life resulting in the freedom that I and my family enjoy today. As you will know I have bought you from in the shadows out into the sunshine and have told all of your relations all about you. I will proudly wear your replica medals for the first time next Anzac Day 2017. Linda Worthington has reunited one of your medals back into the family again which is great.
