Estère - 'Reptilian Journey'

Estère performs her song 'Reptilian Journey' in the Museum's Castle Gallery, surrounded by an incredible collection of rare and unusual musical instruments.

It’s a fitting setting for a song with lyrics focused on longevity and survival - the Castle Gallery is home to centuries-old instruments from around the world.

Estère’s smoky smooth vocals are interwoven with rhythmic percussion, and Victoria Kelly (vocals, Rhodes piano), Ashley Brown (cello) and Sandy Mill (vocals, percussion) give the performance a beautiful richness.

Barely three years into her music career, Estère has already drawn international attention.

A collaboration with New York City rapper and producer Oddisee - set up by the Red Bull Prodigy project which pairs established artists with up-and-comers - saw Estère release three co-produced songs in 2013: 'Flashlight', 'Curtains Down', and 'Noon'.

In 2014 Estère self-produced her eponymous debut album and released it via Bandcamp.

Estère’s original approach - which she has dubbed Electric Blue Witch-Hop - sees her use an MPC (music production controller) to sample and record everything from bass, synth, and drums to kazoo and cutlery drawers, before layering in clever melodies, undulating rhythms, and her own beautiful voice.

In this interview Estère shares with us the inspiration behind her music - from cultural identity, the evolution of reptiles, and even 'imaginary boyfriends'.

Last year Estère’s debut album reached an even wider audience with its release in Europe by tastemaker label No Format.

A growing reputation for her 'rich toned and elastic' voice and her talents as an energetic, one-of-a-kind performer have already seen Estère open for a number of highly respected international artists including Aloe Blacc, Morcheeba, Baths, Erykah Badu, Ikonika and KT Tunstall.

To date Estère has performed on international stages in cities and festivals throughout Australia, South Korea, Denmark, New Caledonia, the UK, and Europe.

This month Estère released her latest track 'Ambition' - fittingly themed around an unlikely candidate for the US presidency - and she's planning to release her self-produced sophomore album in 2017.
