Current volunteer opportunities

There are sometimes unexpected opportunities for volunteers with a strong background in a specialist area, and we are always interested in hearing from potential volunteers with relevant knowledge, interests and skills.

Current volunteer vacancies

We are looking for people to fill these positions:

Volunteer Guides

THIS IS A FRONT OF HOUSE ROLE

Every year we take on a small group of volunteers to train as Museum Guides. If you enjoy meeting people and bringing to life our treasures and stories, and sharing your passion and enthusiasm for the museum, you could become a member of our large volunteer guiding team. We need people with excellent communication skills and a genuine desire to engage visitors of all ages from different backgrounds. We are looking for an interest in New Zealand history, different cultures and natural science. A strong and sustained commitment to ongoing learning and dependability are key attributes for this role.

Please note that entry to the training course is by invitation only, and we ask for a commitment of at least two years should you be successful in being selected for training, and pass the assessment at the end of the course. In 2018, the course will run for two months, during August and September.

If you are a native speaker of Mandarin and have a high level of English, enjoy meeting people and bringing to life our treasures and stories this may be a role for you.  Mandarin experience hosts welcome and care for small groups of Mandarin speakers and work as a cultural translator to share the intricacies of Māori culture and New Zealand History so that our Mandarin speaking visitors have a deeper more meaningful experience during their visit. We need people with excellent communication skills and a genuine desire to engage visitors of all ages and backgrounds. We are looking for an interest in New Zealand history, culture and heritage, and a strong and sustained commitment to ongoing learning.

Information Desk Volunteers

THIS IS A FRONT OF HOUSE ROLE

We currently have a need for more volunteers to work on our Information Desks at both entrances to the Museum. If you enjoy meeting people and helping them make the most of their time in the Museum, you could become a member of our large volunteer team. We need people with excellent communication skills and a genuine desire to help others. A good knowledge of Auckland is also valuable.

The normal commitment is for one half day per week on duty, and lasting at least a year, but preferably longer. We prefer applicants who can be flexible with their availability as the museum is open every day except Christmas day, including school holiday periods and public holidays. Info Desk volunteers need to be available for occasional weekend training days.
