Album probably compiled by Stephenson Percy Smith. The captions and notes are in his hand. Immediately following the Tarawera eruption of 10th June 1886 as Chief Surveyor for the Auckland Province, assisted by E.C. Goldsmith and H.D.M. Haszard, he made a topographical survey of the country affected by the eruption. The survey party also included C.Turner, E.F. Adams, J.C. Blythe, H. Lundius, C Spencer and Tawhare.

Edward Phillips Turner (1864-1937) passed as a surveyor in 1887 and joined the staff of the Lands and Survey Dept. in 1894.

S.P. Smith became Surveyor General in 1889, which position he held until his retirement in October 1900.
