Growing on limestone boulders with stunted Olearia avicenniifolia, Brachyglottis monroi and prostrate Heliohebe raoulii subsp. maccaskillii. Differs from A. ferox by its habitat (limestone cliff and associated boulder field), smaller size, narrower, less open leaves, and smaller stipules. When fresh the leaves are adaxially often tinged glaucous. The same entity occurs further north in Marlborough on the Chalky Range. This gathering is the foliage, while AK302307 is the spent male inflorescence from the same plant.
