    New Zealand, [North Island,] Gisborne Land District, Gray's Bush Scenic Reserve, Sth West margins of bush, on edge of forest

    Small shrub 2m tall. Mod-dense foliage on rounded bush. Bark mid-brown becoming dark red-brown on younger branchlets. Branches zig-zagging with swollen nodes. Leaves on ends of branchlets, heart-shaped, mid-green semi-glossy upper, paler underside. Light veining. Soft. Many insect holes in leaves. Terminal leaf arising from stipule of penultimate leaf. Male spikes in clusters of 2 or 3, held erect. Pale green. White pollen. Leaves aromatic.
    Late afternoon sun only. Forest floor shrub beneath tall cabbage trees, kowhai, and whitey-wood.
