Synthetically dyed kakoko and te ira decorate the gathered pinnules of kakoko. Purple, green, pink and orange synthetic dye has been used to create the coloured patterns in the smocked border of the bodice. The smocking makes up a third of the bodice. The next two thirds has been left as loose strands of pinnules. The sides of the smocked border feature two types of fasteners. A wide, three-ply plaited strip of te ira ties just beneath the bust, then some kora (coconut sennit fibre cordage) features at the top to fasten the bodice of the breast area. This bodice was made by a Marshallese lady based in Kiribati and married to a Kiribati in 1970.
