Fa'alaufa'i

human history
  • Other Name

    Banana leaf club (English)

  • Description

Fa'alaufa'i. Coconut stalk club. Clubs like these were used as weapons by men and warriors in Samoa during times of combat. The general term for club is 'au'upega, and fa'alaufa'i is a type of 'au'upega. There are many different kinds that serve different purposes. This fa'alaufa'i has a solid handle, cylindrical in shape that curved out at the base as well as the top.

There is a semi-circular protrusion at the base which has a hole drilled into it, this may have been used to hang the club for storage. The head and body of the club is flatter than the handle and tapers outwards towards the tip. There are 27 spikes along the length of either side ending in a triangular tip at the top.
