Fa'alautaliga

human history
  • Other Name

    Ear-shaped club (English)

  • Description

Fa'alautaliga. Ear-shaped club. This fa'alautaliga is made from one piece of toa (iron wood). The fa'alautaliga is a natural brown colour with a part-polished smooth surface. The handle of this fa'alautaliga is cylindrical in shape and is undecorated. At the base of the handle is a triangular protrusion drilled with a small suspension hole. Through the hole, a piece of twine has been threaded and tied to attach a brown swing tag label.

The handle then flares to a flat four sided blade. The blade then flares again to form a wide rounded tip that is synonymous with the fa'alautaliga. Both sides of the entire blade are adorned with mamanu (Samoan decorative motifs). The mamanu are comprised of triangular indents. Some of the indents are filled with white powder and some are not indicating that the loose substance may have fallen out over time. The fa'alautaliga is an 'au'upega (weapon of war). The Samoan word for ear is taliga, therefore the name fa'alautaliga is in reference to the ear-shaped club.
