  • Description

    i Ula. Throwing club. i Ula are carved from the rootstock of a hardwood tree. It is intended as a weapon that can be gripped in the hand or thrown in short range distances at assailants. This i Ula consists of an uneven ball-shaped head and long slender adjoining handle. The head is rounded, with a small metal cog piece riveted to one side. A long vertical crack as well as a notched incised into the wood are visible at another area on the head.

    The handle is cylindrical in shape. Tavatava (shallow incisions) consisting of a zigzag design, are carved across the lower half of the handle in light relief. A small metal nail is hammered into the butt of the handle, centred. The i Ula is brown in colour and has a slightly glossy patina.
