human history
  • Other Name

    Basket (English)

  • Description

Kato. Basket. This is a hand woven kato. It has been made from lau fā (pandanus leaf). It is rectangular in shape and is two-sided. The opening of the kato portrays a woven serrated rim. Two kavei (handles) of the same material fibre have been attached to the kato. A braided finish has been used to fix the base along the kato. A horizontal chevron pattern is defined by a dark brown lau fā near the rim of the kato. The pinnules are speckled in different tones of brown.

The remaining woven mass of the kato is of a pale, matte yellow. This kato is part of the Te Rangi Hiroa (Dr. Peter Buck) collection.
