human history
  • Other Name

    Paddle (English)

  • Description

Hoe. Carved ceremonial paddle. This hoe (paddle) is carved from ra'au (hardwood) into a teardrop-shaped rapa (paddle blade) with a long slender handle, round in section, that flares toward the butt. The butt is carved into eight stylised ti'i (ancestral human figures) arranged concentrically with a carved sun motif on the flat surface at the butt. The entirety of the surface of the wood is carved with decorative geometric designs in light relief.

The rapa (paddle blade) is chipped around the edges. The hoe is dark brown in colour with some patina.
