Hoe

human history
  • Other Name

    Paddle (English)

  • Description

Hoe. Carved ceremonial paddle. This hoe (paddle) is carved from ra'au (hardwood) into a teardrop-shaped rapa (paddle blade) with a long slender to'o (shaft), round in section, that flares toward the butt. The butt is carved into eight stylised ti'i (ancestral human figures) arranged concentrically with a deep central cavity on the butt. A segment from the side of the rapa (paddle blade) has broken off.

The entirety of the surface of the ra'au is carved with decorative geometric designs in light relief. The hoe is reddish brown in colour with some patina.
