On reaching Alexandria, she worked for three months at an English Army Hospital in Alexandria, Egypt before the NZ unit was split up and dispersed (much to the unit's displeasure) on arrival at Nottingham, England in mid 1916. Maud was then sent to Walton-on-Thames before the Unit was re-assembled and sent to St Omer in France, which at that time was a target for enemy bombing. Maud then went to Amiens before moving on to Abberille where she served in the front line. On return to the UK Maud took charge of a nurses’ home where New Zealand nurses were in residence.

Maud returned to NZ on a hospital ship and was in charge of a ward at Narrow Neck Hospital in Auckland before Maud and her sister Vivienne opened "Cairnhill" Private Hospital in Mountain Road, Auckland. Maud lived in Loch Street, Remuera. In 1926 she married George Glacken and subsequently moved to Masterton.
