Locality Description
New Zealand, North Island, Auckland Ecological Region, Inner Gulf Islands Ecological District, Tiritiri Matangi Island, Hobbs Beach
Field Collection Date
14 Apr 2009
Field Collection Notes
Under coastal edge vegetation, 2m in from edge, but well under cover of karamu (Coprosma robusta) shrubs at foot of steep forested bank, c.15m from MHWM. Leaves to 55cm long x 3.3cm across. Never seen it on the island before. I am pretty sure the plant has not been there very long, maybe 2 years as it was basically one clump and I am sure we would have noticed it before if it had been there when we were grid searching. It is unlikely to have been planted there recently, however the location is the site of the old homestead at Hobbs Beach so perhaps there were plants around there and a seed has survived in the soil? Or the seed has arrived recently?
