May Smith trained at Elam School of Fine Art, Auckland and then at the Royal College of Art in London. Noted as a fabric designer she also was a painter. She returned to New Zealand in 1939 to work as a teacher. Like other artists Smith experimented with block-printed fabric patterns incorporating New Zealand imagery, often of flora and fauna.
