Ornamental fan. This is a hand held fan. This iriba n bobai consists of four material components: pinnules of noko (coconut midrib), pinnules of kakoko (the young, white central leaf of the coconut), te ira (panadus leaf) and feathers. The central area of the iriba (fan) is flat and circular in shape. A handle extends from the centre of the blade of te iriba. The central area is structured by a series of noko. A range of synthetically dyed pinnules of kakoko in blue, red, yellow, light grey, pale green and natural tones of off-white decorate the surface area of the noko structure. Motifs of diamond patterns define circular borders across the centre. A few pinnules of noko have been curved around the edge of the fan and secured with blue kakoko. The ends of the features have also been secured into the noko with the blue kakoko to create the feathered border of the iriba. The features are mostly white with brown tinted ones spaced throughout. An off-white strand of te ira has been used to create a woven encasement. This has been fixed with a two-ply kakoko cord where the handle meets the iriba and again at the base of the handle in a red colourway. A loose end of this is present. This style of fan is considered ornamental and not for everyday use.WāhiKiribatiAccession Number2002.95.1Rā Tāpiringa15 Oct 2002Tohu Tuakiri Kē55961 (ethnology)WāhangaPacificRūma WhakaatuH91 Learning Base - Landing Pad Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Iriba n bobai; 2002.95.1; 55961; Cultural Permissions Apply Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Whakaaturia te wāhiH91 Learning Base - Landing PadRārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 2002.95.1, 55961Takenga ā-AhureaKiribatiKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiKiribatiRāPre 1940sTikanga Waihangawoven [handwoven]Waitohu/māka55961; 2002.95.1 (handwritten)Pāoho[coconut leaf]/leaf (plant material)/plant materialpandanus (leaf)/leaf (plant material)/plant materialfeather/animal materialcoconut leaf midrib/coconut leaf/leaf (plant material)/plant materialRaraunga Ine340mm245mmHuinga KaupapaFibrework/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Taumata whakarōpūFanPersonal Assistive ArtefactsPersonal GearPersonal ArtefactsWhakahounga o Mua02 Mar 2023 E hangaia tonutia ana te kohinga tuihono a Tāmaki Paenga Hira; tāpirihia ai ngā whakahoutanga me ngā pūkete i ia wiki.
