Titi Fau

human history
  • Other Name

    Kilt of hibiscus (English)

  • Description

Titi fau. Kilt of hibiscus. This is a hand woven titi fau. This titi fau is made entirely of fau (type of hibiscus). The titi consists of a braided waistband. This waistband is also adorned with woven rosettes made of fau and dyed green, pink, and purple. Bordering the waistband are strands of braided fau, using the same three colours; green pink and purple. The rosettes and the braided border have been sewn in place using thin strips of fau.

On each upper corner of the waistband is a braided hand tie made of fau. Hanging from the waistband are long tassels made from the fau bast. These tassels are firstly knotted decoratively to each other to create a net-like design. The tassels then hang loosely and undecorated. A titi fau was traditionally worn as a dance costume and because of their open nature were sometimes worn over other types of clothing.
