This is a large handwoven fan. A handle of kieto (ebony wood) has been hafted into a length. It is a blend of dark brown and light brown tones. The handle is circular in cross section near the base of the blade, but tapers so that its end is thin and rectangular in shape. The end is unfinished and has some cracks in the grain of the wood, as well as slight cavity extending inwards. The blade, which is damaged and has been torn almost in half, has been constructed from a framework of lau niu (coconut midribs) and woven over with kāniu (the young white leaf of the coconut frond). The woven blade is triangular in shape and flat in form. The sides curve in to form a serrated top corner. The spine of the blade protrudes slightly on one side. The junction of the blade and the kieto handle has been wrapped with a pale-yellow strip of lau fā (pandanus). This width of lau fā has been completely interwoven with a 3 ply braided length of lau ulu (human hair) to create an intricate geometric mata pelē (pattern), used to further decorate the iliili.WāhiNiueAccession Number1931.363Rā Tāpiringa1931Tohu Tuakiri Kē16612 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1931.363, 16612Takenga ā-AhureaNiueanKohingaMrs A C LennardKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiNiueRāPre 1931Tikanga Waihangacarved plaited woven HaftedWaitohu/māka16612; Presented; Nui Island; Mrs Lennard (handwritten)Pāohopandanus (leaf)/leaf (plant material)/plant material[coconut leaf]/leaf (plant material)/plant materialebony/hardwood/wood/plant materialhuman hair/hair/animal materialRaraunga Ine555mm320mm25mmHuinga KaupapaFibrework/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Taumata whakarōpūFanPersonal Assistive ArtefactsPersonal GearPersonal ArtefactsWhakahounga o Mua16 Sep 2019 E hangaia tonutia ana te kohinga tuihono a Tāmaki Paenga Hira; tāpirihia ai ngā whakahoutanga me ngā pūkete i ia wiki.
