Toki

human history
  • Other Name

    Adze (English)

  • Description

Toki. Adze. This is a toki made of maea (rock). The toki is grey in colour with a flake finish. The surface of the maea is poroani (smooth), therefore the maea can be referred to as maea poroani. The butt is rounded and undifferentiated from the blade. The toki also has a quadrangular cross section. The bevel is straight with a slight ridge where it meets the back.

This type of maea was found in water as it is a different colour from the maea found inland and typically used to make toki. Toki is considered an ancestral tool in Rapa Nui and was used to carve large figures out of wood.
