This is a toki made of maea (rock). The toki is grey in colour with a flake finish. The surface of the maea is poroani (smooth), therefore the maea can be referred to as maea poroani. The butt is rounded and undifferentiated from the blade. The toki also has a quadrangular cross section. The bevel is straight with a slight ridge where it meets the back. This type of maea was found in water as it is a different colour from the maea found inland and typically used to make toki. Toki is considered an ancestral tool in Rapa Nui and was used to carve large figures out of wood.WāhiRapa Nui (Easter Island)/Polynesia/PacificAccession Number1931.533Rā Tāpiringa1931Tohu Tuakiri Kē16806 (ethnology)3900 (Bishop Museum)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Toki, 1931.533, 16806, 3900, Cultural Permissions Apply Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1931.533, 16806; 3900Takenga ā-AhureaRapa NuiWāhiRapa Nui (Easter Island)/Polynesia/PacificTikanga WaihangacarvedWaitohu/māka16806 / EX / c 3900 / EASTER (handwritten)Pāohostone/rock/inorganic materialRaraunga Ine152mm33mm52mmHuinga KaupapaStonework/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Taumata whakarōpūAdzeWoodworking T&ETools & EquipmentWhakahounga o Mua16 Oct 2019 E hangaia tonutia ana te kohinga tuihono a Tāmaki Paenga Hira; tāpirihia ai ngā whakahoutanga me ngā pūkete i ia wiki.
