human history
  • Description

Brush for whitewashing walls. This implement was considered modern in 1931 (the year of its accession into Auckland Museum collection). The implement consists of a long shaft derived from possibly niu pulu (coconut husk) or hoko faa (pandanus aerial root) which is fringed at one end which acts as a brush.

The implement is light in colour and weight, with a suspension loop of pulu (coconut braided sennit) and wrapping of coconut and lauulu (human hair) blend incorporated into the shaft.
