'Uatogi

human history
  • Other Name

    Ribbed club (English)

  • Description

'Uatogi. Ribbed club. This 'uatogi is made from one piece of toa (iron wood). The handle of this 'uatogi is cylindrical and undecorated. At the base of the handle is a suspension hole with a length of twine threaded through. The handle then flares to a flat four-sided blade with a diamond cross-section. The entire blade is covered in diagonal grooves to create the ribbed design that is synonymous with 'uatogi.

'Uatogi were a type of 'au'upega (weapon of war) recognised for its ribbed features. These ribs not only strengthened the blade but made it much more lethal in combat.
