  • Description

Buddha head. Granite, head and part of the neck. Hair worn in a topknot, eyes closed. Right side of nose missing. Gandharan style heads in schist and limestone from Northwest India. Gandharan art reflects a fruitful coming together of Central Asian and Indian artistic traditions and Hellenistic (Greek) styles from the time of Alexander the Great's incursion into India in the 4th century BC and subsequent Greek kingdoms in Asia.

It is particularly associated with the Kushan Empire of Northwest India, Afghanistan and much of Central Asia from the 1st to the 4th century AD. [This head from 14th century].
