white shirt with embroidered initials "IK" or "JK"
fine, white cotton shirt with square-set, drop shoulder, heavily gathered sleeve, finishing with fine pleating at cuff; cuff fastens with single mother-of-pearl button; high standing fold over collar fastens at throat with 2 mother-of -pearl buttons; front fastening with placket finished with buttonhole stitch reinforcing and heart-shaped top-stitched decorative motif with 2 mother-of-pearl buttons; vents at both side seams lower edge; separate front and back panels; back panel heavily gathered at neck line; initials I.K. in fine red cross stitch above vent front right

In 1849 Elizabeth King was twelve years old. A similar shirt in the collection of the Waimate Mission House, is described as a hand-sewn shirt that belonged to John King, "complete with hand-embroidered heart at the base of the neck opening of the shirt", and "the initials ‘JK’ cross-stitched in pink thread near the bottom right hand side of the shirt'.
It is suggested that this shirt was made by Hannah King (Elizabeth's mother], and may have been a betrothal shirt - the couple married in 1812.
