Before his arrival in New Zealand in 1874, Edwin Oliver was apprenticed as a joiner and carpenter in Cornwall, England. In New Zealand he worked as a builder and cabinet maker in Christchurch, where he designed and built several houses.
He was awarded the Certificate for Order of Merit at the Dunedin Industrial Exhibition 1881 for his ‘crazy quilt’ type writing box inlaid with New Zealand woods.
