poising caliper

human history
  • Description

    Poising calliper

Brass tool with two square pincer arms with curved handle, central pointed arm with joint at centre, moveable between pincers. Engraved "TB".

With moveable arm to check the truth of the balance wheel.

When a new balance staff (the axle of the balance wheel which often broke when the watch was dropped) was fitted, the balance wheel had to be poised, which meant finding its heaviest and lightest parts, in order to add or remove weight to get it "balanced". The balance pivots were rested on the horizontal edges of this tool, allowing the balance to roll until the heaviest part was at the bottom.
