    Smith & Brown memorial clock, WW2

  • Description

    memorial clock (Smith and Brown), electric clock in carved case;

    made in memory of 9 Smith & Brown Ltd staff members who lost their lives during WWII.

    The clock features carved laurel wreath around the face and two catafalque guards figures either side of the memorial.

    Below the clock face in gold lettering is a banner with the words:

    "AS TIME PASSES WE WILL NOT FORGET"

    and below this list the names memorialised:

    Commemorative clock made in memory of nine Smith & Brown Ltd staff members who lost their lives during WW2. The clock was displayed in the reception area of the Smith & Brown building, Scotts Hall, Upper Symonds Street, Auckland.

    Names include

    *NZ 41863 Pilot Officer Alan William Asmuss, RAF, was the pilot of a Hurricane Fighter flying in practise formation over the Sidi Aziz area when the aircraft crashed and he was killed.

    *428755 Flying Officer Norman Harold Benton, RNZAF, was a member of the crew of a Ventura bomber which failed to return from a leaflet dropping mission over the East Coast of New Ireland on 9 June 1942

    * 402845 Flying Officer Hilliard Ernest (‘Butch’) Boucher MiD, RNZAF was engaged in practising flying on radio bearings from Ohakea when his Kittyhawk flew into a hill near Hunterville and he was killed on 13 February 1945. Previous service in Pacific - Guadalcanal, Vella La Vella, Treasury Island, New Georgia and Bougainville

    * 421918 Flight Kenneth Arthur Lieutenant Hill, RNZAF, was a member of the crew of a Halifax aircraft which crashed shortly after take off from Blyton during a training flight on 22 January 1944.

    * 4216055 Flying Officer Athol Eric Kilner, RNZAF, was the pilot of a Corsair reported missing on a strafing and bombing raid over Bungan Buka on 17 October 1944.

    * NZ 425265 Pilot Officer Brian Charles Levet, RNZAF, was killed in an aircraft accident at Race Course Hill between Darfield and Waddington, Canterbury, NZ, on 28 October 1943 while engaged on a dual flying instruction flight

    * 1/16/273 Gunner Charles James Drysdale, NZ Artillery, served in New Zealand only and was killed 18 September 1942 at Paihia.

    * 21803 Sapper Jack William Lyall was a member of 7 Field Company, NZ Engineers and served in the UK, Egypt, Greece and the Western Desert. He was killed in action on 27 June 1942 and is buried at the El Alamein War Cemetery

    * 81159 Corporal Edmund Noel Noonan, 36 Infantry Battalion enlisted on 17 October 1941. He served overseas in Fiji, Norfolk Island and the Solomons (Treasury Island) as a member of 36 Infantry Battalion. He was killed in action on 28 October 1943 and is buried in the Bourail War Cemetery New Caledonia.
