The upright chair is carved with numerous motifs including a blacksmith at work, horse heads and a mix of enigmatic Maori and English carving and weaving patterns and symbols.
Embodying the ideal of the Arts and Crafts movement it takes its massive form and elaborate carving from English crested and carved-back chairs of the seventeenth century.
