Waist ornament. This is a waist ornament made from te ira (pandanus leaf), te burerewa (money cowrie; monetaria moneta) a larger kind of te buuro (shell) and string. A belt woven with te ira has been made to form the base of the taona n riri. It has been finished with a serrated edge. A long strip of black dyed ira has been machine stitched onto the woven belt base. A series of te burerewa have been stitch down through a basting stitch onto the black strip of ira. Te burerewa portray a yellowish transparency over a base exterior that is off-white and slightly grey in colour. Their centres are slightly bulbous in form with small protrusions surround the flat base area. A larger kind of te buuro (shell) that is similar in make and shape to te burerewa has been attached to one end of the taona riri. Its surface exterior shows traces of red and white base. Two off-white strings have been attached to the ends of the taona n riri to create fasteners when worn across the waist. These would be worn only by women or young girls. They would be positioned across the waist above te riri (skirt) and below a waist ornament of te nana (coconut shell) discs.WāhiKiribatiAccession Number1995.34.13Rā Tāpiringa16 May 1995Tohu Tuakiri Kē54929 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Taona n riri, 1995.34.13, 54929, Photographed by Daan… … Read more Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1995.34.13, 54929Takenga ā-AhureaKiribatiKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiKiribatiRāCirca 1940Tikanga Waihangapolished woven sewn machine stitchedWaitohu/māka54929 (handwritten) 54929; 1995.34.13 (label, stick on/label)Pāohoshellpandanus (leaf)/leaf (plant material)/plant materialstring (fiber product)/cord (fiber product)Raraunga Ine840mm40mmHuinga KaupapaAdornment/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Performing Arts/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Women/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Taumata whakarōpūOrnament, WaistBody AdornmentOrnamentPersonal ArtefactsWhakahounga o Mua05 Dec 2018 E hangaia tonutia ana te kohinga tuihono a Tāmaki Paenga Hira; tāpirihia ai ngā whakahoutanga me ngā pūkete i ia wiki.
