Belt

human history
  • Other Name

    Belt (English)

  • Description

Belt. This is a belt made from te ira (pandanus leaves). Seven braids of te ira make up the width of the belt. The braid featured along the centre of the belt length has been synthetically dyed a dark blue colour. Two braids that border this one are of a light brown tone. This could be a result of how te ira would have been cultivated with the intention of retaining a darkened natural colour.

The remaining braids which alternate between the blue and light brown braids are of a neutral, light beige colour. The same tone of te ira has been used to create a weft in holding the horizontal braids together thus forming the belt. A small vertical loop has been created out of te ira in a natural pale beige and dyed red and blue to create a plain woven pattern.
