  • Description

    A kete whakairo, flax kit, illustrating the whakapuareare pattern. The whakapapa (commencement sequence) of this kete whakairo is laid out in dextrals and sinistrals of undyed harakeke. The dominant pattern is a whakapuareare (decorative openings in the plait). The kete finishes off at the top with rows of takitahi pattern. Attached just inside the rim are two handles of a double layer of rolled muka plaited in three-ply whiri (braid) and a tassel hanging to one side.
