  • Description

    Pareu. Dance skirt. Composite materials. Multiple strands of dyed red kiriau (hibiscus fibre) creating thick volume. All strands tied and knotted at the top of the garment with a wide band of white fabric sewn on top.

    This band of fabric has several decorative elements attached to it: hanging red kiriau tassles, puka seeds, poepoe seeds, decorative flower motifs made from combinations of matakoviri seeds, poepoe, four central decorative elements with red fringing and puka seeds. The term 'toto kiore' or cat's blood, is used to describe the red colour of the dyed kiriau.
