  • Other Name

    [Savaii, Western Samoa]

  • Description

LIdded container. This is a handmade box shaped like a laumei (turtle). The box has two components: a container and a lid. Both parts are a light brown colour and have a smooth polished surface. The container is fairly shallow and oval in shape. This container is held up by four appendages that are shaped like the flippers of a laumei. The two hind legs have additional carved features to mimic the scales of the laumei.

At the tip of the oval-shaped container is a rounded protrusion. Carved into this protrusion are a pair of eyes and a mouth to act as the head of the laumei. The underside of the container and the inside is a darker shade of brown than the rest of the box. The lid has a semi-circular cross-section and is made of a thick piece of wood. The outer surface has been carved to depict the bony scales of the pakua laumei (turtle shell). The underside of the lid is carved in an oval shape also to fit around the container. This box was made as a gift and could have been used to hold jewellery or other small items.
