Ulu tao

human history
  • Other Name

    Spear head (English)

  • Description

Ulu tao. Spear head. This ulu tao is carved from kieto (ebony) into a long pointed shape with a reduced base intended to be inserted and lashed securely with pulu (coconut sennit) to a wooden shaft to complete a full tao, or throwing spear. The ulu tao is carved to a sharp point at its apex although this has since been damaged, and nine barbs are carved in progression down the shaft of the ulu tao before carved features of two 'cuffs' towards the base.

The ulu tao is dark in colour with matte and smooth surface treatment.
