Te iriba n bobai

human history
  • Other Name

    Ornamental fan (English)

  • Description

Te iriba n bobai. Ornamental fan. This is a hand held fan. It consists of four material components: te noko (coconut midrib), te kakoko (the young, white and central leaf of the coconut palm), and burae ni moa (chicken feathers). Te iriba n bobai is circular in shape and flat in form. The blade is structured with a series of te noko that extend outwards from the centre. The structure of te noko has been covered with a weave of te kakoko.

A series of outer and inner circular borders are defined by synthetically dyed te kakoko in a light green, pale purple and bright pink. Two pinnules of te noko have been curved and placed near the edge of the blade. It has then been secured together with te kakoko. The selvedge's of te noko are visible from where white coloured burae ni moa may have been present. A series of burae ni moa curve inwards on both sides of the blade. Fragments of this are missing portraying an incomplete border. A slim and cylindrical shape begins from the centre of the blade extending outwards to form a handle. A woven encasement of te kakoko covers the spine of the handle. A three strand plait of the same material forms a small loop at the base of te iriba n bobai for hanging.
