human history
  • Common Name
    Armament T&E, Bludgeon
  • Other Name

Dagger set with shark's teeth (English)

  • Description

Te bekenene. Dagger. This is a handheld weapon made from the following materials: te kanni (coconut palm wood), wii ni bakoa (sharks teeth) and te kora (cordage of coconut sennit fibres). A length of te kanni has been cut, carved and filed to portray both a handle and blade component. The handle has been portrayed as a cylindrical form with a circular cross-section at its base. A small rim has been carved out where the blade and handle intersect.

The blade is spatulate in form and tapers towards a sharp point at its end. Eight small perforations have been drilled along the edge of the spatulate blade and a furrow has been filed out into both edges. Eight wii ni bakoa have been set into the furrows and lashed individually with te kora. A central perforation has been drilled through each wii ni bakoa for the purpose of inserting te kora. One wii ni bakoa is missing from the base of the blade and some of them are slightly loose.
