Skirt

human history
  • Other Name

    Skirt (English)

  • Description

Skirt. This is a natural fibered garment. When laid out flat it is rectangular in shape and flat in form. Vertical segments of the gathered hibiscus baste strips are defined by colour: Green, red and a natural pale yellow. This colour sequence has been repeated across the skirt. It is made of two material components: hibiscus baste and pandanus leaf. A red and green synthetic colourant has been used to dye the segments of hibiscus baste strips.

The strips are uneven in length. A plaited cord of pandanus leaf and purple synthetically dyed hibiscus baste shows where the red, green and natural baste strips have been attached. This can be seen through the even knotted segments along the cord of the waistband. Pandanus and hibiscus woven cord appears to encase a traded cord as seen on either end. The cords extend at the top right and left hand corners. These assist in fastening the skirt to the wearer when worn.
